The University of Liverpool is a member of the Russell Group of major UK research-intensive universities and was ranked second in the UK (Research Assessment Exercise 2008) in the Metallurgy and Materials subject area. University research occupies seven major themes, of which two are particularly relevant to the current partnership - ‘sustainable energy’ and ‘materials for the future’.  The School of Engineering is engaged in a wide range of ongoing research programmes involving structural materials and mechanics for optimum structural design and materials degradation at high temperatures, as well as in application of lasers for additive manufacturing.
